King Protea – Protea cynaroides
An iconic flower of South Africa, known for its huge flower heads and crown-like arrangement of bracts. Native to the Cape Floristic Region, Protea cynaroides was recorded botanically as Leucadendron cynaroides in 1753, before being placed in the genus Protea in 1771.
It is the largest Protea species, a perennial capable of regenerating after wildfires — a characteristic feature of South African flora. Today it is widely cultivated as a cut flower and is officially the national flower of South Africa.
