Nerine typically blooms in autumn, just as many other flowers are finishing their season. In some species, flowers appear before the long, slender leaves emerge, creating a distinctive, instantly recognizable silhouette.

The name Nerine comes from the Nereids, sea nymphs of Greek mythology and daughters of the sea god Nereus. The ancient Greeks believed the Nereids lived in the ocean, helping and protecting sailors.
In 1820, botanist William Herbert named this flowering genus Nerine after those mythical nymphs. Nerine is a genus of bulbous plants in the Amaryllidaceae family, native to southern Africa.
Rather than impressing through sheer size, Nerine charms with its delicate, dynamic silhouette. Narrow, reflexed petals with gently rippling edges and long stamens reaching beyond the center create an appearance that is both soft and striking.
