Nerine is a genus of bulbous flowering plants in the Amaryllidaceae family, native to southern Africa.
Rather than making an impression through sheer size, Nerine captivates with its slender, expressive form. Narrow, reflexed petals with gently ruffled edges and long stamens extending beyond the centre create a delicate yet striking silhouette.
Nerine blooms range from pink and white to red. The flowers grow in clusters on long, slender, almost leafless stems, lending them a light, airy, almost ethereal quality. Pink and red Nerine flowers can resemble red spider lilies (Lycoris radiata) because of their reflexed petals and prominent stamens. Botanically, however, Nerine and Lycoris are distinct genera, although both belong to the Amaryllidaceae family. Kew recognises them as separate genera.
