Gloriosa, commonly known as the Flame Lily or Glory Lily, bears the scientific name Gloriosa superba L. and belongs to the Colchicaceae family. Despite the name “lily,” it is not a true lily of the genus Lilium, but a climbing, tuberous herbaceous perennial. Native to tropical Africa and Asia, the species was described by Carl Linnaeus as Gloriosa superba in 1753. Its six long, slender, wavy, reflexed petals shift from yellow through orange to red, resembling dancing flames. In Japan, Gloriosa is grown as a cut flower and ornamental plant, particularly in greenhouses, where its warmth-loving nature supports high-quality blooms.
